Modi and Starmer commit to accelerate Free Trade Agreement negotiations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Keir Starmer engaged in a phone conversation, focusing on advancing the India-UK bilateral relationship, particularly through the prompt finalization of a beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
FTA negotiations and strategic partnership
Following the Labour Party's decisive victory in the UK elections, Modi congratulated Starmer and expressed India's readiness to swiftly conclude the FTA negotiations. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the UK, highlighting areas like defense, technology, and climate change for deeper collaboration.

India and the UK initiated FTA negotiations in January 2022 and have conducted 14 rounds of discussions. While progress has been made on several fronts, negotiations have encountered obstacles related to market access and tariffs, particularly concerning automobiles and alcohol.
During the call, Modi acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora to the UK's social, economic, and political fabric. Both leaders agreed to continue promoting close people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Starmer commended Modi's leadership on global issues such as climate change and economic growth, underscoring their mutual commitment to addressing these challenges collaboratively.

He also thanked outgoing UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his efforts in strengthening India-UK relations during his tenure.
